Finding Our SoCal Roots Wrap up

The Genealogical Society of Hispanic America was well represented by Colleen Robledo Greene, at the Finding Our SoCal Roots event, 9 April, at the USC Cammilleri Hall. The panel included Colleen, Kenyatta D. Berry, author and Genealogy Roadshow; and Michael Ho, president, Chinese Family History Group of Southern California. PBS SoCal sponsored the event. Liza Posas, L.A. as Subject coordinator was the moderator and posed questions that spoke to how to begin family research, historical and legal barriers to ethnic groups, the impact of DNA testing, and alternative databases for family research. Since Colleen gives a class on Genealogy for graduate students, she has recommended the following book: "How to do Everything: Genealogy" by George G. Morgan. GSHA-SC members Consuelo and Raul Moore and Cathy Romero also attended this event.

A Message from the GSHA-SC Board

Dear GSHA-SC members and the general public: Our chapter and society as a whole has been struck with a crisis that every person in the world has had to experience. We hope you and your families will be given the strength to weather this unwelcome tide of events. Since our meeting space at the Southern California Genealogical Society in Burbank will be impacted by the amount of attendees that can be present. With this in mind, we will have a hybrid meeting with Zoom and in person attendance. .

However, we are planning to have virtual meetings using GoToMeeting or Zoom. When we schedule meetings, they will be promoted with Facebook, email blasts and in some cases, mailed notifications.

We hope you will have patience with us as we work through this transition. You matter to us. Thank you.

GSHA-SC is a 501(C)(3) non-profit California corporation #33-05894533, a non-profit group maintained purely by volunteers, as such we donate some our funds to benefit the awareness of preserving history, teaching our members and non-members how to do genealogy and promoting genealogy where and when we can. In the past, we had helped organization, such as Hispanic Heritage Project in scanning old documents to preserve history and we helped underwrite Genealogy Garage at the local Los Angeles Public Library, where they promote all types of research in areas of genealogy. There have been others throughout the many years this organization has been in existence. Past records of donations can be reviewed, if requested.

The Genealogical Society of Hispanic America – Southern California (GSHA-SC) was founded in 1992 to promote Hispanic genealogical and historical research with a focus on the American Southwest and Mexico.

Our goal is to expand awareness and knowledge of individual Hispanic culture, history, and traditions.

We encourage the sharing of information through:

• general meetings

• workshops

• research days

• Chapter newsletter

• GSHA journal

You are invited to join our members who are searching for their Hispanic roots. We are affiliated with GSHA, a national entity, based in Pueblo, Colorado. There are separate Pueblo and Utah GSHA Chapter.

Whether you have just began to explore your family lines or you are an experienced researcher, please join us. We have members who are eager to help you begin your ancestral search and as a group we benefit from the knowledge that veteran researchers have to offer.

We are proud to represent a membership that is both willing and able to assist you in discovering a rich and colorful Hispanic Heritage . . . a heritage in which you can be justly proud.
