Hispanic Genealogy: Spanish Records class available in Oakland

For those of our members living in Northern California, we were notify by California Genealogical Society that they are hosting a seminar by an expert, Lucy Jennings Sweeney, on Saturday, March 9, 2019 from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM (PST) in Oakland, California. We realized this is late notice, but just received the information. The price for admission to the classroom is $30 and an advanced registration is required. Their location is California Genealogical Society & Library, 2201 Broadway, Suite LL2, Oakland, CA 94612.

Discover how to search for your Hispanic ancestors, using records such as baptism and marriage. You don’t need to know how to read Spanish. You will receive a resource list of online and print material.

Records in Spanish contain a person’s genealogy. Learn how to verify your family stories, how to use the Spanish naming system, and how to find records for your country and town.

Lucy Jennings Sweeney is a San Francisco native who graduated from UC Berkeley. When she retired from teaching, she began investigating her heritage which spans roots in both Mexico and Ireland, with great success in Mexico. REGISTRATION INFORMATION Pre-registration is required. Class size is limited so register early. CGS members enjoy free admission. Non-member admission fee is $30.00* and can be applied towards a new one year CGS membership the day of the class. Register early to confirm your seat. Walk-ins will not be admitted. A Message from the GSHA-SC Board

Dear GSHA-SC members and the general public: Our chapter and society as a whole has been struck with a crisis that every person in the world has had to experience. We hope you and your families will be given the strength to weather this unwelcome tide of events. Since our meeting space at the Southern California Genealogical Society in Burbank will be impacted by the amount of attendees that can be present. With this in mind, we will have a hybrid meeting with Zoom and in person attendance. .

However, we are planning to have virtual meetings using GoToMeeting or Zoom. When we schedule meetings, they will be promoted with Facebook, email blasts and in some cases, mailed notifications.

We hope you will have patience with us as we work through this transition. You matter to us. Thank you.

GSHA-SC is a 501(C)(3) non-profit California corporation #33-05894533, a non-profit group maintained purely by volunteers, as such we donate some our funds to benefit the awareness of preserving history, teaching our members and non-members how to do genealogy and promoting genealogy where and when we can. In the past, we had helped organization, such as Hispanic Heritage Project in scanning old documents to preserve history and we helped underwrite Genealogy Garage at the local Los Angeles Public Library, where they promote all types of research in areas of genealogy. There have been others throughout the many years this organization has been in existence. Past records of donations can be reviewed, if requested.

The Genealogical Society of Hispanic America – Southern California (GSHA-SC) was founded in 1992 to promote Hispanic genealogical and historical research with a focus on the American Southwest and Mexico.

Our goal is to expand awareness and knowledge of individual Hispanic culture, history, and traditions.

You are invited to join our members who are searching for their Hispanic roots. We are affiliated with GSHA, a national entity, based in Pueblo, Colorado. There are separate Pueblo and Utah GSHA Chapter.

Whether you have just began to explore your family lines or you are an experienced researcher, please join us. We have members who are eager to help you begin your ancestral search and as a group we benefit from the knowledge that veteran researchers have to offer.
